Bench Ranch is settled in the foothills of the dramatic Beartooth Mountains. The ranch is owned and operated by a hardworking and environmentally responsible family- Jack and Susan Heyneman and their five sons. They have opened their one special cabin for rent to the public enabling everyone to experience the wonders and spirit of Montana

Bench Ranch is blessed with 2 ˝ miles of the West Rosebud River, a tributary to the Stillwater, which feeds into the Yellowstone River – the longest, uninterrupted river in the lower United States. The river yields fat and healthy rainbow and brown trout. In keeping with our Holistic Resource Management philosophy, only catch and release fly-fishing is allowed on the ranch property. However, excellent public fishing access on the Stillwater, Yellowstone and several lakes and streams are just a short drive away.

Our ranch is completely surrounded by other privately owned ranches. Most of our 5000-acre ranch is free for you to explore and enjoy!

When you arrive at our cabin the majestic landscape will take your breath away. The stillness and privacy will bring it back again. We believe our guests return year after year because the soul finds a home here on this land, whose magic has captured the hearts, minds and imagination of some of history’s greatest figures – Sitting Bull, C.M. Russell, and Pulitzer Prize author, Wallace Stegner.

This peace, this place, is rare. This is sanctuary.

HOLISTIC PHILOSOPHY
Along with a few neighboring ranches in the Rosebud Valley, we operate our ranch according to the values and methods of Holistic Resource Management whose basic tenet is that " the whole is greater than the sum of the parts." HRM’s goal is to preserve and enhance the natural resources of the ranch. The ranch uses a minimum amount of chemicals. HRM provides a healthier ecosystem for the animals, the land, and the community.

Bench Ranch is also operated under a conservation easement with the Montana Land Reliance. The Torgrimson Place is one of only six home sites that can be developed on this beautiful 5,000-acre ranch.
Bench Ranch has been owned and operated by Jack and Susan Heyneman and their sons since 1959. We have developed a holistic philosophy as stewards of this land and have developed interests and affiliations with organizations such as the Montana Land Reliance, Northern Plains Resource Council, Montana Committee for the Humanities, and the Yellowstone Art Center.

Opening the Torgimson Place allows us to share the beauty and integrity of this extraordinary valley with a few of the visitors to our state. For more information on the ranch you may want to refer to the section "Crow Country" in American Places, written by our friends, Page and Wallace Stegner.

HUNTING and FISHING:
Mule deer abound in the hills surrounding the guesthouses, while white tail deer tend to hide in the abundant cover of the river. Fox, marmot, raccoons, mink, squirrels, owls, both golden and bald eagles and coyote know this area as their home. Mountain lions and black bear live in this region but tend to shy away from the home sites.

Bench Ranch is offering guided deer hunts on a limited basis. We can also arrange for fly-fishing lessons with a professional fishing guide.
